Explore how to engage interpersonal and intrapersonal skills, of both yourself as the teacher and your students, in order to help them process all they are facing right now. Teachers will learn about leveraging their own social and emotional skills in order to support students’ development, including social, emotional, and academic. We will use interactive slides and other opportunities for active engagement for the learning in this session. Participants will be provided copies of strategies and activities to utilize in their classrooms and with their students.
PRESENTERS:
Jennifer Orr, a 2013 ASCD Emerging Leader, has been an elementary school classroom teacher for more than 20 years, teaching students in grades from kindergarten through fifth. She is National Board Certified and serves on both the boards of VASCD and ELASCD. Jennifer has published articles for ASCD, NCTM, and other publications. She has presented at conferences across the country on topics ranging from academic conversations, thinking skills, reflection, technology in the classroom, and assessment. In addition, she taught an elementary literacy class for graduate students at George Washington University and is currently teaching Children’s Literature at George Mason University.
Krista Leh, a 2012 ASCD Emerging Leader, began her career over 20 years ago as a high school teacher, then as an instructional technology and curriculum coach. She co-developed a student leadership organization inspiring her to focus on social emotional learning. Krista is also an adjunct professor in a Master of Education program that emphasizes Social Emotional Learning. In this capacity, she has created and facilitated courses on Research Design and Methods, Curriculum Design and Development, Culturally Responsive Teaching, and Closing the Achievement Gap. Over the past 10 years, Krista has worked with educators in more than 25 states on creating sustainable K-12 systems of SEL as well as diversity, equity, and access.
